We believe that a responsible approach in these areas can lead to greater efficiencies, lower costs and a reputation as being a responsible service provider.
We are committed to minimising our impact on the local, national and global environment and we encourage our staff and all those with whom we do business to do likewise.
We therefore aim to:
Driving forward actions to reduce our impact on the environment is the responsibility of the Environmental Committee, chaired by the Practice Director and made up of representatives from all areas of the Firm. Last year we calculated our carbon footprint (2.97ECO2e per staff member) using an expert agency (Greenstone Carbon Management). This provides us with a measure to benchmark our progress with ongoing carbon reduction strategies. We are very proud of the fact that we utilise geothermal heated water from Cofely District Energy, an environmentally friendly substitute for gas. In the past the efforts of the Environmental Committee have been recognised by the Sustainable Business Partnership via a Sustainable Business Award. Our award was “In recognition of excellence in the field of economic, social and environmental sustainability as a part of the firm’s business model, and for being an inspiration to other businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight“.
We are members of the Legal Sector Alliance, a Law Society group that is committed to taking action on climate change. Our progress was recognised by the Law Society when they shortlisted us as one of only four UK finalists for the 2009 Legal Excellence Award for Environmental Responsibility.
Through the Firm’s HR Strategy we aspire to become the region’s first choice for lawyers, secretaries and support staff and seek to achieve this by the application of best practice in the management and development of our people, maintaining our Best Companies accreditation, communicating with our people and understanding their concerns. We encourage input from staff via regular team meetings, the Staff Liaison Committee, and periodic staff opinion surveys.
Support for Charities
Charities supported in previous years have included the County Air Ambulance Trust, the Alzheimer’s Society, NSPCC, Wessex Cancer Trust, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Rose Road and Children in Need, all of which benefited from significant financial donations. Every year fund raising activities involving staff volunteers are actively encouraged. We provide conferencing and meeting room facilities for our supported charities and a charity contribution is made in lieu of Christmas cards each year. We have also supported the Wessex Heartbeat and we have raised sufficient funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind to have one of their guide dogs named as ‘Paris’, after the firm.
Pro Bono Legal Advice
Our lawyers have a long tradition of providing free or low cost legal services to a number of local trusts, charities and other not for profit organisations such as Wessex Heartbeat. This covers a wide range of issues including tax, planning, commercial property and employment. We also offer charities free membership of our Charity Forum.
Safety and Welfare
The health and safety of our staff, clients and other visitors is high on our agenda and our commitment to this has been recognised in the past by the British Safety Council with an International Safety Award. We understand that we are the only law firm in the South to have received this accolade.
Supporting Local Businesses
At Paris Smith we believe that by investing in the infrastructure of the local community we can help to enrich our relationships with other businesses.
We therefore prefer to have goods and services provided by local businesses and we have in place standing arrangements for the provision of photocopy machines, electrical, plumbing, refurbishment services, furniture, stationery supplies, training, design and printing, cleaning, staff benefit advice and business insurances. Our policy is to deal with suppliers who themselves have adopted sustainable business practices and are keen to support the local community. This is achieved via our Sustainable Procurement Policy.
We support Business South and we are a founder City Champion, promoting the region for the good of all businesses.
