The Partners of Paris Smith believe that Community and Social Responsibility revolves around the understanding of the impact our business has on the environment, the welfare of individuals, the community and the sustainability of the worlds resources. Running the Firm in the local community goes beyond making profits and acquiring wealth and we therefore acknowledge our obligation to consider the wider interests of our clients, employees and the community in which we function.

A responsible approach in these areas can lead to greater efficiencies, lower costs and an improved reputation as a responsible service provider and employer.

Environment

We are committed to minimising our impact on the local, national and global environment and we encourage our employees and all those with whom we do business to do likewise.

The Firm will aim to:

  • Raise the environmental awareness of those with whom it has contact and encourage them to make environmentally sound and sustainable decisions;
  • Encourage the efficient and least environmentally damaging use of energy;
  • Encourage the use by ourselves and our suppliers/contractors of environmentally sound and sustainable resources;
  • Reduce the quantity of waste produced to a minimum and recycle waste material wherever possible; and
  • Offer employees a safe, hygienic and as far as possible, an attractive working environment.

Driving forward actions to reduce the Firms impact on the environment is the responsibility of the Environmental Committee, chaired by the Practice Director, Alan Cousins. This is made up of representatives from all areas of the Firm and a key achievement to date has been to ascertain the carbon footprint per employee (2.7ECO2e per annum) supported by the Carbon Trust. Only a relatively small number of law firms in the UK have established their carbon footprint and this provides us with a measure to benchmark our progress with carbon reduction strategies. We are very proud of the fact that we utilise geothermal heated water from Utilicom which is an environmentally friendly substitute for gas. The efforts of the Environmental Committee were recognised by the Sustainable Business Partnership, when they announced in 2008 that we were joint winners in the Sustainable Business Award in the medium business category.  Our case study is available on the organisers' website.

The organisers stated that our award was "In recognition of excellence in the field of economic, social and environmental sustainability as part of the firms business model, and for being an inspiration to other businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight".

We were one of three finalists in the challenging "Leadership" category for the 2009/10 Sustainable Business Award and we are members of the Legal Sector Alliance, the Law Society's group of firms that are committed to taking action on climate change.

Our progress was also recognised by the Law Society who shortlisted us as one of only 4 UK finalists for the 2009 prestigious Legal Excellence Award for Environmental Responsibility.

Wellbeing Of Our Staff

Through the Firms HR Strategy we aspire to become the regions employer of choice for lawyers, secretaries and support staff and seek to achieve this by the application of best practice in the management and development of our people, maintaining our Investors In People accreditation and having effective mechanisms in place to communicate with our people and understanding their concerns. We encourage input from staff via regular team meetings, the Staff Liaison Committee, and periodic staff opinion surveys.

Support for Charities

Paris Smith supports a number of charities and for 2011 our nominated charities are NSPCC and Wessex Cancer Trust

In 2010 our charity was NSPCC. Charities supported in previous years included Guide Dogs for the Blind and Rose Road, both of which benefitted from significant financial donations. Every year fund raising activities involving volunteers are actively encouraged among our staff and partners who take part in dress down days for charity and charity walks etc. We provide our conferencing and meeting room facilities for our supported charities and a charity contribution is made in lieu of Christmas cards each year.  This year we have entered a team for the Fairbridge Charity Zero to Hero competition.  We are also supporting the Wessex Heartbeat 'Your Healthy Heart' campaign.  For more information visit our 'Charity Support' page

We have raised sufficient funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind to have a guide dog puppy named 'Paris', after the firm.

Sponsorship

We are keen to support local sports and the arts and in particular we have been major sponsors of Southampton Football Club, the Hampshire Cricket Club and the Mayflower and Nuffield Theatres.

Pro Bono Legal Advice

Our lawyers have a long tradition of providing free or low cost legal services to a number of local trusts, charities and other not for profit organisations such as Wessex Heartbeat. This covers a wide range of issues including tax, planning, commercial property and employment.

Safety and Welfare

The health and safety of our staff, clients and other visitors is high on our agenda and our commitment to this has been recognised by the British Safety Council with an International Safety Award for the fourth year running.

We understand that we are the only law firm in the South to have received this accolade.

Supporting Local Businesses

At Paris Smith we believe that by investing in the infrastructure of the local community we can help to enrich our relationship with the local community and enhance the work that we do.

We support local businesses who are able to supply us with goods and services. Currently the Firm has long standing arrangements for the provision of photocopy machines, electrical, plumbing and refurbishment services, office equipment, furniture, stationary supplies, training, design and printing, cleaning, staff benefit advice and business insurances. Our policy is to deal with suppliers who themselves have adopted sustainable business practices, support the local community, use raw materials and/or supply products that are eco friendly and save waste.  This is achieved via our Sustainable Procurement Policy.

We support Business Southampton  and we are a founder City Champion, promoting the region for the good of all businesses.

The Firm assisted in the creation of The Solent Innovation & Growth Team, and continues its support of SIGN's activities, because it is committed to the development of successful innovative companies and businesses in the Solent and South Hampshire region and believes that SIGN will play a pivotal role in pursuing that objective.  For further information on SIGN please visit http://www.innovationgrowth.co.uk/
